Progressive familial heart block type 1 (PFHBI) is an autosomal disorder of the cardiac conduction system that may progress to complete heart block (CHB) (Brink and Torrington 1977; Van der Merwe et al., 1986 and Van der Merwe et al., 1988). PFHBI has been defined on electrocardiograph (ECG) by evidence of bundle branch disease, namely, right bundle branch block, left anterior or posterior hemiblocj or complete heart block with broad QRS complexes (Brink and Torrington 1977) Stephen and colleagues reported a familial cardiac conduction disease, with clinical features similar to PFHBI, termed isolated cardiac conduction disorder (ICCD), in a large Lebanese family (Stephan 1979), which was subsequently mapped to the same chromosomal region as PFHBI (De Meeus et al., 1995).
