In the present South African teaching situation the responsibility to impart music education to the learners, especially in the Early Childhood Phase, falls more and more on the class teacher. This implies purposeful training and functional preparation of teachers in the music education. This foundation entails a thorough description of music education and related aspects of curriculum science. A further need that was addressed in the process to highlight more closely the relevance and necessity of the role of curriculum development in music education. The main aim of this study was the development of a curriculum for the effective training of teachers in music education. This study is anchored in both the educational and music disciplines. On the educational terrain the study focuses especially on curriculum science. In the music discipline the emphasis is mainly on the music education. It is important that students are trained both in music ans music education. An orientation programme was designed to give students a basic framework of reference of music and music education. The approach of music concepts served as starting point where music concepts are introduced by means of music skills. This study focuses on the student and higher experience of the orientation programme. It was found that the approach of music concepts lends itself exceptionally well to this, when it was focused on four music concepts (tone colour, tone intensity, tone duration and tone levels) and seven music skills (skill analysis, movement, listening, singing, instrumental skills, creativity and learning skills). Action research, which included both quantitative and qualitative research methods and which made use of the principle of triangulation was applied in the orientation programme. Data and information derived from the research show that the orientation programme was successfully implemented and that students were empowered and found it useful.
