The purpose of this research is to evaluate the current operational policy regarding the prevention, identification and management of infectious diseases in day care facilities for children, and to make recommendation in this regard. As background to the study, a literature review was done relating to the prevalence of infectious diseases in child day care facilities. Current operational policies are then analysed and evaluated according to a specific policy issue, namely the operational policies with regard to the prevention, identification and management of infectious diseases in day care facilities for children in the Cape Metropolitan Area. The study showed that current operational policies are inadequate, and that there is a need for more comprehensive, user-friendly guidelines to be used by all staff in these facilities. Taking the Constitution, 1996 and the Children's Right Charter into consideration, ignorance cannot be used as an excuse any longer for the ineffective prevention, inadequate identification and inappropriate management of infectious diseases, should they occur in child day care facilities. Each child has the right to health care, and it is the responsibility of the caregiver to provide it. A set of guidelines was compiled, as part of a number of recommendations, with the idea, that after the necessary permission was obtained, this will be available to staff in child day care facilities.
