Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Journalism. Newspapers Electronic publishing Electronic news gathering Electronic newspapers Dissertations -- Journalism Thesis (MA) --Stellenbosch University, 1997 Online publishing has become a necessity for newspaper publishers if they are to survive in the new media age. The aim of this study is to investigate and analyse the implications of the new communication technologies on the newspaper industry and to research why and how the electronic paper will make its mark in the new media era. A literature study was conducted to determine the history of online newspaper projects and how it has influenced today’s online ventures; the similarities (or differences) between the printed and electronic newspapers and why these are crucial to the success of the newspaper; the impact of legal, ethical and regulatory issues on the new online projects; the economic or income generating options that exist for the online newspaper to make e-papers profitable; the impact of the online medium on the content and design strategies of the e-paper and what tools are available for online information design; as well as the impact the digital newspaper has on the role of the newspaper publisher and its staff, and on the consumer. In the section on South African newspapers online, the knowledge gained from the literature study for the other sections was applied to evaluate each of the South African newspapers that have taken the online plunge. Lastly, a research/field study was conducted to determine the familiarity with and receptiveness of the South African Internet user to an electronic newspaper, as well as their expectations of such a newspaper. Although this study has shown that the electronic medium offers new possibilities for generating income, it is still too soon to expect e-papers to be profitable. If online newspapers are to become profitable ventures, they have to be designed in such a way as to make optimal use of the medium and the unique features it offers. These added advantages must be applied so as to enhance the habit-forming predictable efficiency of the electronic newspaper, and to render it superior functionally when compared to the printed paper. To achieve this, and thus to survive in the new media age, journalists will have to be trained to acquire the necessary skills to adapt the printed product to the digital medium. Publishers will also have to pay attention to legal and ethical issues that did not require their attention in the printed-only days, or that have become more complex in the electronic world. What is perhaps more important, is that publishers will have to view themselves as being in the content and information business, rather than merely in the newspaper business, if they are to remain at the core of the information mix, and of this new age. This means that newspaper publishers will have to investigate new options to survive. They will have to find a balance to continually improve the traditional, hard core product, while at the same time exploring the new electronic opportunities. This does not mean that electronic papers will replace their printed forerunners; rather they have to complement and supplement each other – at least for the foreseeable future. Newspaper publishers need to optimise the coexistence of printed and online media, study the advantages of each and make them both indispensable to the reader. By doing this, publishers are preparing themselves for a gradual decline in printed readership, while at the same time positioning their product to cater for the growing number of people expected to choose online services rather than printed papers for their news as technological advantages make these options more attractive.
