Dept. of Educational Psychology. Cognition disorders in children Child development -- Study and teaching Child care -- Psychological aspects Down syndrome -- Patients -- Education Dissertations -- Education Proefskrif (Ph. D.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1997. A growing body of evidence suggested during the past few years that learning in children with Downsyndrome differs significantly in structure and organisation from that seen in other children. The result has been that research on the cognitive development of children with Downsyndrome has begun to focus on what ways do Downsyndrome alter the pathways and processes of cognitive development and how do they respond to success and failure when trying to improve cognitive skills. Against this background the functionality of the cognitive skills of initially eight children with Downsyndrome in a mainstream school in Pretoria, South Africa, in the regulation, control and handling of information were asessed in order to develop a cognitive development programme for them. Social variables such as ethnic origin, family size, parental education or social class were not taken into account in the selection process. A programme based on: -The findings of research on the cognitive functioning of ch. Idren with Downsyndrome (Wishart, 1993; 1995). -The role of the mediator as discussed by Feuerstein, Rand and Rynders (1988). -The cognitive control therapy programme of Santostefano (1985) was developed and implemented for a final group of five children (as three children moved to other schools in other areas) for a period of two years. Results after the completion of the programme indicate significant improvements in general cognitive ability and a trend in their favour on other academic measures. Although it is difficult to determine which aspects of the mainstream placements contributed to the academic improvements made by the children on other measures in just two years, the evidence from this study indicates that children with Downsyndrome are capable of having their cognitive developmental needs met in a structured cognitive development programme.
