ENGLISH ABSTRACT: According to the Jungian view of life the human psyche has an inner need for balance between the animus and the anima. The search for this balance is characterised by the conflict between the · above-mentioned forces in the human psyche. This conflict is also reflected in Reza de Wet's plays, which express a dramatic inner liberation process as an alternative to an unbalanced animus-anima relationship. This study examines this process as a pattern of ritual liberation in De Wet's work. In order to determine whether a ritual dimension does exist in De Wet's plays, one needs to understand the context in which her works were written. Thus the study first of al l focuses on the biographical aspects of De Wet's evolution as writer, in conjunction with those literary, ·philosophic and theatrical influences which helped to give her plays their unique character. The ritual aspect in De Wet's plays is further explored by means of a study of the connections between the Artaudian concept of a Theatre of Cruelty and De Wet's plays. The pattern of ritual liberation is explored further through a detailed study of play as an expression of ritual in Trits, De Wet's second collection of plays. The study specifically focuses on Trits because the ongoing liberation process in her work reaches its climax in Trits. The main conclusion of this thesis is that inner liberation in De Wet's works is undoubtedly a ritual process, one in which play functions as an expression of ritual. The nature of play in Trits has a number of implications concerning the concepts performance and performer. In fact, in Trits, the notion of play allows for more performers to become involved in the ritual of liberation than just the characters of the plays and the actors who portray them. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Volgens die Jungiaanse opvatting bestaan daar by die mens die innerlikestrewe na balans tussen animus en anima. 'n Soeke na balans wordgekenmerk deur 'n konflik tussen die twee kragte in die mens. Hierdie konflikvind ook weerklank in die dramas van Reza de Wet. As alternatief op 'nongebalanseerde anima-animus-verhouding stel De Wet se werk 'ndramatiese innerlike bevrydingsproses.In hierdie studie word ondersoek ingestel na bogenoemde proses as 'n rituelepatroon van bevryding in De Wet se oeuvre. Om te bepaal of daar wel 'nrituele dimensie by De Wet se werk bestaan, is dit nodig om die kontekswaarbinne haar oeuvre ontwikkel het, te begryp. Vir hierdie doel word daareerstens gefokus op De Wet as mens en skrywer asook die invloed vanliterere, filosofiese en teaterrigtings wat haar werk as eiesoortige karakterhelp ontwikkel het. Daarna word die moontlikheid van 'n rituele dimensie inDe Wet se werk verder verken aan die hand van 'n ondersoek na dieverbande tussen die ritualistiese Artaudiaanse Teater van die Wreedheid endie werk van De Wet.Die rituele patroon van bevryding ·by De Wet word, deur middel van 'nindringende studie van spel, as 'n ekspressie van die rituele in Trits, haartweede bundel _ , ondersoek. Die fokus val spesifiek op Trits omdat diedeurlopende bevrydingsproses in De Wet se oeuvre in die bundel 'n klimaksbereik.Na 'n deeglike analise van Trits is die hoofgevolgtrekking waartoe in hierdietesis gekom word dat die innerlike bevrydingsproses in De Wet se oeuvreinderdaad 'n rituele proses is. Die spel in Trits funksioneer daarom weldeeglik as 'n ekspressie van die rituele. Die aard van hierdie spel hetbepaalde implikasies ten opsigte van die konsepte performance enperformer. Trouens, die spel in Trits gooi die veld oop vir veel meerperformers van die rituele bevryding as slegs die personasies en die akteurswat hul rolle vertolk.
