Fuelwood -- Sierra Leone, Western Fuelwood consumption -- Sierra Leone, Western Fuelwood industry -- Sierra Leone, Western -- Planning Dissertations -- Forestry Thesis (M. Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1997. This study deals with woodfuel demand and strategy for a sustainable supply in the Western Area of Sierra Leone. A survey on household and non-household woodfuel consumption was conducted to get a better understanding and design a supply strategy to combat the alleged shortage. A stratified systematic and random sampling methodology was used. Two hundred households were covered. The weighted average annual per capita woodfuel consumption was found to be 0.53 m3. This is less than the previous investigations by some consultants and researchers. A positive woodfuel balance was obtained. Factors that influence demand trends generally known as demand shifters were considered. The positive woodfuel balance is in excess of 5.41 m3 per capita projected for the year 2006. It is often claimed that a severe deficit of woodfuel is developing in the Western Area. For some countries, the scarcity was attributed to excessive woodfuel use. The complete disappearance of the forest growing stock before the turn of this century was even predicted. This prediction is no longer true for the Western Area of Sierra Leone. The problem is not scarcity but inaccessibility, inadequate household income and other socio-economic factors for which strategies have been recommended. If the local communities are to be responsible for looking after a woodlot, they should be involved right from the planning stage of the afforestation programme. This will clarify issues and responsibilities for the management and utilisation of the woodlot. Thus suspicion will be removed. A climate of friendship and co.operation will prevail in the woodlot development process and a sustainable supply source is thus assured.
