Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dept. of Nursing and Midwifery. Medical care -- Swaziland Dissertations -- Nursing Thesis (MNur.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. Nationally and internationally emphasis is placed on quality care in health care services. The researcher identified a need to evaluate patient care in the hospitals of Swaziland. A study based on the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was conducted to formulate and evaluate structure, process and outcome standards for surgical patients in selected hospitals in Swaziland. The most important results are: • The standard relating to the structure was suboptimal. Physical and human resources which are of critical importance to the rendering of quality patient care did not comply with the set standard norm of 80%. • The process standards focused on the pre- and post-operative care of the patient, recordkeeping and execution of aseptic procedures. Substandard care was found in all these aspects. • Outcome standards determined by the patient questionnaire also revealed predominantly negative findings. Recommendations included the development of a quality improvement model for Swaziland Health Services, formulation of standards for all disciplines of health care, annual evaluation of patient care and institution of formal staff development programmes. Keywords: Quality care; Quality care models; formulation of standards; structure, process, outcome - surgical patients.
