ENGLISH ABSTRACT: the aim of this study was to explore and describe the police-reffered mentally disturbed person (MDP). This aim was achieved by describing the police-reffered MPD's profile and the exploration of aspects of the South African Police Services (SAPS) management of MDP's. Data was gathered by studying retrospectively the hospital records of 139 MDP's that was admitted to psychiatric hospitals and through the SAPS members completion of semi-structured questionnaires. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie se doelstelling was om die polisie-verwysde geesterversteurde persoon (GVP) te verken en te beskryf. Die doelstelling is bereik deur die polisie-verwysde GVP se profiel te beskryf en aspekte van die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisiediens (SAPD) se hantering van GVP te verken. Data is ingesamel deur die hospitaalrekords van 139 GVP's wat opegeneem is deur psigiatriese hospitale retrospektief te bestudeer en deur middel van semi-gestruktureerde vraelyste wat deur polisie-lede ingevul is.
