Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Ancient Studies. Priests -- Egypt -- History Egypt -- Religion Egypt -- Civilization -- To 332 B.C Dissertations -- Ancient Near Eastern Studies Tesis (MA) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1998. This thesis is a phenomenological description of the priests as religious mediators in ancient Egyptian society. The study was aimed at defining the role of the priests in the society. The society of ancient Egypt can be viewed from different perspectives. The religion was never systematically written down, neither was there an attempt to define their religion because it was an inherent part of their daily life. The basic structure of the Egyptian religion was the worship of the local gods and goddesses. Two things stood out prominently in the Egyptian religion, namely the "Collective identity" of the Egyptian person and the collectiveness of the family. The Egyptian person was part of a collective existence and the community was his frame of reference. Another outstanding characteristic was the believe in life after death. It is for this reason that the believe in and the offering and the gifts for the dead was of utmost importance. There was also a strong believe in the creator god Re who came into being out of the chaos and started the process of creation.Magic played a cardinal role in Egyptian society and was one way in which the Egyptians tried to explain the natural world in which they functioned. It was aimed at manipulating the sacred powers. Within Egyptian society it was a very complex concept.Certain classes of priests existed and they were organised in a hierarchical order. The term priest literally means "servant of God." The priestly classes formed a high percentage of the old Egyptian population. There were strict requirements for the office of the priests and they had to adhere to a high moral code. The priests were not spiritual servants, but mere officials in the temples. Their role was mainly administrative and they formed part of the society in many ways. The priests were agents of the social order and were of service to the community. The priests were mainly active in the temple which was traditionally the house of the gods. All power was invested in the pharaoh as the high priest of all Egyptian temples. The priests were involved in all facets of Egyptian life and important links in the functioning of old Egyptian society.
