ENGLISH ABSTRACT: At present, many film adaptations are being made of Jane Austen's novels. A change of medium can have a serious effect on the plot, theme and meaning of a story. The question then arises of whether these changes are positive or negative; whether or not the 'message' of the work is illuminated or obscured. I identify the issue of female consciousness in Jane Austen's six published novels, as presented primarily as a sense of confinement. Jane Austen manages to show not only that this confinement exists in all aspects of life, but also how it is concealed beneath a surface of politeness. She offers an escape from this, a partial escape certainly, but one that offered the best alternative in a world of restrictions.
