Ed.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was undertaken in response to the appeal for a culture of learning and teaching in our schools. Early in 1997 the government launched its culture of learning and teaching campaign to underscore the importance of restoring the culture in our schools. Without a culture of learning and teaching i our schools we cannot restructure our education system. School improvement programmes turn to school culture and climate as the starting point to initiate the change process. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is onderneem in antwoord op die beroep om 'n leer- en onderrigkultuur in ons skole te hervestig. In die jaar 1997 het die regering 'n leer- en onderrigkultuur veldtog geloods om die noodskaaklikheid van die skep van hierdie kultuur in ons skole te beklemtoon. Sonder 'n leer en onderrig kultuur in ons skole kan ons nie ons onderwysstelsel rekonstruëer nie. Skool verbetringsprogramme kyk na skool kultuur en klimaat as die beginpunt om die veranderings proses te inisiëer.
