ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This comparative study concerns the synthesis, characterization and determination of the stability of two emulsion latices prepared without the addition of conventional adsorbable surfactants. Stability of the latices was achieved by the incorporation of surface-active comonomers, also referred to as polymerizable surfactants. The first system, which represents the commercial class of surfactants free latices was stabilized by incorporation of an anionic monomer. The second system representing a recently novel class of latices was stabilized with zwitterionic sulphobetaine monomer. For the synthesis of the latices a semi-continuous starved-feed method was used. The latices were used ia further study to determine the influence of ionic strength on their colloidal stabilities. The stabilities are discussed in in terms of the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory involving a complete mathematical analysis of the diffuse electric double layer around the latex particles. The stability factor was incorporated to determine the diffuse potentials and the Hamaker constants of the electrical double layers. 2012-08-27T11:37:19Z 2012-08-27T11:37:19Z 1998-03 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/55982 en_ZA Stellenbosch University 89 pages : illustrations application/pdf Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University
