Electric current converters Switching circuits Electric power distribution Electric power transmission Dissertations -- Electrical engineering Dissertation (Ph. D.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation discusses the application of static power converters in electric utilities. It shows the evolution of modern silicon switching technology and converter configurations. Problems associated with these configurations are addressed in order to isolate a topology best suited for high-power utility applications, i.e. to switch high power at high frequencies. It is shown that the Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole (ARCP) Converter is a preffered soft-switching topology at high power. The analysis of this topology is consequently done in detail, by addressing ideal and non-ideal circuit behaviour. The analysis is complemented with a typical synthesis of an ARCP converter prototype. The most important high-power design constraints are heat management and control of stray inductance. Issues such as peak component stress and electromagnetic noise are also addressed. The dissertation concludes with ideas on the implementation of high frequency converter technology up to the MVA power levels.
