Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Drama. Drama -- Therapeutic use Theater -- Psychological aspects Rites and ceremonies Dissertations -- Drama Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. Theatre and its various functions have been studied from many different angles. This study focuses on the therapeutic function of theatre. Theatre originated from ritual. Using this as a point of reference, various elements of theatre – as derived from ritual – and their therapeutic function are investigated. A holistic approach is followed in carrying out this investigation. An overall view of the many ways in which theatre can be used as a therapeutic medium is given by categorising the larger whole into specific aspects and linking these to the elements of ritual. Every aspect is then examined in detail. The investigation further follows a symbolic approach to theatre, where theatre is regarded as a mirror of life. In this study, it leads to the conclusion that theatre not only provides an opportunity to observe a reflection of the external world, but also to gain an intra-psychological perspective on the self.
