spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/55991 The assumptive world theory and the cognitive processing of trauma Du Plessis, Edwin D Van der Westhuizen, Le R. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Post-traumatic stress disorder Cognitive therapy Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. The assumptive world theory, proposed by Janoff-Bulman, is a relatively new approach to the understanding of the cognitive processing of trauma. The theory provides a comprehensive and complex theoretical explanation of the impact of traumatic experiences. Based on both social psychological and information processing approaches, it provides a refreshing look at the study of the adjustment to traumatic experiences. In an attempt to explore the empirical usefulness of the assumptive world theory, the basic concepts of the theory were discussed, the theory’s conceptualization of the processing of trauma cues was critically analysed and its operationalization and therapeutic applicability were investigated. It was concluded that Janoff-Bulman provided a theoretically insightful and empirically useful approach to the comprehension and the study of psychological responses to traumatic experiences.
