This article describes a qualitative study into the experiences and perceptions of students from previously disadvantaged communities at an historically white Afrikaans university in South Africa. The study aims to identify the variables operating in this particular contact situation as well as explain the underlying dynamics in terms of Social Identity Theory. The sample was composed of five female students of whom three were “coloured” and two were black and six male students of whom four were “coloured” and two were black. Three of the participants were approached directly by the researcher, the remaining eight were recruited by means of “snowballing”. The research was conducted by means of semi‑structured interviews which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. A thematic analysis yielded 12 major themes. Most of the findings seem to confirm the experiences of black and minority students on white campuses in South Africa and the USA. A few, however, appear to run counter to findings reported in the literature. Most of the participants felt that in spite of many negative experiences, academic evaluation is fair and notwithstanding a host of psychosocial stressors, all appeared to be coping exceptionally well.
