AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit is allerweë bekend dat die suidelike deel van Portugees-Oos-Afrika, en insonderheid Delagoabaai, vanweë sy aardrykskundige ligging veral in die neëntiende eeu herhaardelik van belang in die Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis geword het, en dat ook die kusstrook ten suide daarvan 'n belangrike rol in ons volkverlede gespeel het. Gegewens oor die Europeërs se belangstelling in en kontak met die betrokke gebiede gedurende die onderhawige eeu, sowel as Portugal se ontdekking en inbesitname van Mosambiek veel vroeër, is inderdaad reeds deur geskiedskrywers na vore gebring.
