J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dept. of Pathology. Lungs -- Diseases Dissertations -- Medicine Thesis(Ph. D. (Odont)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1991. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder of unknown cause(s). Patients with sarcoidosis frequently present with bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, pulmonary pathology, ocular and skin lesions, but other organs e.g. liver, mediastinal lymph nodes and salivary glands may also be involved. Clinical and radiological findings supported by histological evidence of non-caseating epithelioid cell granulomas are required for diagnosis, while granulomas of known causes (e.g. tuberculosis) and local sarcoid reactions must be excluded.
