Agric.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. The effects of several factors on the stimulation of zygotic embryo growth in seedless cultivars and seedless X seedless crosses of Vitis vinifera L. were investigated. It was found that the in vitro development of plants from the embryos of seedless cultivars was mainly determined by cultivar and the age of cultured ovules (weeks post bloom). Excision of embryos (potential plants) from ovules after a period in culture resulted in a higher percentage of germinated embryos. A comparative study on the ontogeny of zygotic embryos of a seeded and two seedless cultivars were also undertaken. The development of embryos from seedless cultivars were delayed in comparison with the seeded cultivar and was suspended at a later stage. The heart- and torpedo-shaped stages of development were not observed in the seedless cultivars. Degeneration of embryos were not observed in any of the cultivars at 11 weeks post bloom.
