spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/57822 The depiction of space in four Xhosa novels Dlali, Mawande Du Plessis, J. A. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Modern Foreign Languages. Xhosa literature -- 20th century -- History and criticism Dissertations -- Xhosa language Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. This study investigates setting in a novel and tried to establish whether it has any influence on the Xhosa novel. For the purposes of this investigation, this study has been organised as follows: Chapter One reflects on the aim of this research, methods of research and the literary background. In the literary background, mention is made of the different types of setting and what each type entails. There is also a review of previous research by scholars in Xhosa. In addition, the views of researchers of other languages are also included. Chapter Two deals with setting in the two narratives written during the 1930’s and 1950’s. The extent to which space has been portrayed in these two narratives is analysed. This chapter is divided into three sections namely, space and the plot structure, space and character and space and time. Chapter Three is concerned with setting in the two narratives written during the 1970’s. An analysis of space of these narratives is done in connection with the plot structure, character and time. The emphasis is however, on space since it plays a great role in the novel. Chapter Four summarises the findings of chapters one, two and three.
