spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/57858 A phenomenological study of the experience of conversion to Christianity Evans, Anna Caitlin Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Conversion -- Psychological aspects Experience (Religion) Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. In this thesis literature concerning religious conversion is discussed, introducing the reader to the need for a phenomenological study on the topic. The body of the thesis is comprised of a phenomenological study of four adolescents' conversions to Christianity. The aim of the thesis is to discover the structure and meaning the experience of conversion to Christianity had and still has for them. The Duquesne University Method, with special reference to De Koning (1979) was used to achieve this. The general structure of conversion obtained was then discussed with references to the preceeding literature study, which includes reference to Kiekegaard (De Vos, 1993), to situate the study in a historical existential framework. Essential themes that form the basis of this general structure are as follows: 1. Movement form apathy to commitment 2. Personal crisis and alienation in the beginning of and during the process 3. Conversion brought about by a committed Christian who acts in a nonthreatening way (a mentor figure) 4. Forming a personal relationship to Christ and ceding one's life to God's service 5. Changes in behaviour 6. Growth in self-esteem 7. Relationships in their families changed 8. Changes in relationships with others, making new friends and moving away from others.
