Dept. of Medicine. Atopic dermatitis Skin -- Diseases Dermatology -- Research Dissertations -- Medicine Proefskrif (M.D.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1993. The clinical recognition of a specific constellation of symptoms and signs leads to the diagnosis of a specific clinical syndrome. These parameters can be correlated with laboratory results to confirm the presence of the disease. Atopic eczema should be seen as the end result of a complex predetermined cascade of changes unique to this disease. These changes can be employed to diagnose patients with this affliction. Atopic eczema is a chronic pruritic inflammatory disease of the skin. This condition is associated with a specific clinical expression and a personal or family history of hypersensitivity which includes allergic rhinitis, allergic bronchospasm or gastro-intestinal defects (Baer 1955).
