The effect of temperature on the development and reproduction of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), was studied at 6 different temperatures (15, 18, 20, 23, 25 and 30°C) on English cucumbers, cv. ‘Pepinex’. Life tables indicated that the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rₘ), and the net replacement rate (R₀) were highest at 30°C and lowest at 15°C. Population increase and exponential growth were achieved at all the above temperatures except at 15°C where an almost stable population existed. The generation time (T) was shortest at 30°C and increased as temperature decreased. Oviposition increased with an increase in temperature, females matured and reproduced earlier and the fecundity rate (mₓ) was higher at 30°C than at lower temperatures. Adult longevity was shortest at 30°C. The minimum threshold temperature for development was determined as 9,4°C. The physical or physiological-chemical basis of resistance in rose cultivars to western flower thrips was examined. Behavioural responses to colour, rose odours versus no odour were tested, and life history characteristics studied on seven rose cultivars at 30°C; life tables were compiled.
