Research worldwide during the past two decades has drawn attention to misconceptions in Physical Science as a common problem amongst high school pupils, and even amongst students at tertiary level. It is found that misconceptions appear in all sections of Physical Science. One of the significant characteristics of misconceptions appears to be the fact that they are not eliminated, regardless of more advanced teaching. It has been found that the nature of misconceptions bears a direct relation to a pupil’s experience and interpretation of his own life world. For example, many pupils are convinced that a continually applied force is necessary to maintain any motion. If such a force ceases to act, the motion will come to an end. In the literature research, emphasis was placed on the presence, the extent, the nature and causes of misconceptions with respect to forces generally speaking. Various research methods which could be applied, were investigated. This was followed up with the choice of a suitable method. The empirical research, which was decided upon, was directed to black matriculants in the Vaal Triangle Area. Questionnaires were used where respondents were expected to identify the presence and nature of any forces in given situations. The typical misconceptions shown in literature, were verified, and the problem of selfexpression by means of a second language, was pointed out. Literature stresses that it is no easy task to attempt to eliminate misconceptions. More research is required. Conclusively, some suggestions are made to reduce or even eliminate misconceptions in Physical Science.
