A simple beacon that can be used to calibrate radar receivers during normal operations, was developed. The system is properly defined by means of a block diagram. It was divided into receiver and frequency synthesizer sub circuits, each of which was developed independently. Frequencies were chosen judiciously to avoid intermodulation products in mixers. The receiver sub circuit consists of a 300 MHz local oscillator, two mixers, an amplifier and filter. Specifications for each component were drawn up. Mixers were chosen to satisfy these specifications. A filter that produces the correct mixer intermediate frequency, was developed. A unique filter configuration constructed in shielded Microstrip-line, was used. This filter suppresses the waveguide modes that can develop in the covering shield. The S-parameter design technique with which the local oscillator was designed is discussed. The frequency synthesizer consists of two Frequency Offset Phase-Locked Loops. A digital phase/frequency detector was used to prevent the Phase-locked loop from locking onto the mixer image frequency. Control system feedback theory was used to aid the Phase-locked loop design. Methods to obtain effective isolation between sub circuits are discussed. Buffer amplifiers were developed to isolate the oscillators from the circuits that act as the loads. A layout technique that prevents coupling between sub circuits, is described. Use was made of shielding, grounding and power supply decoupling. In conclusion results are given and placed in perspective. A working system with effective suppression of mixer intermodulation products was obtained.
