Existing computer programs which calculate the operating point of wet cooling towers are improved by using the most recent correlations for pressure drops and the most recent developments for the derivition of the draft equation. The e-NTU method is shown to simplify the calculation of the operating point of cross flow cooling towers. Since there is no reliable correlation available for mass transfer in the rain zone of cooling towers, a complete mathematical analysis of the rain zones of round and rectangular cooling towers are presented to calculate the energy transfer. After dimensional analysis, an empirical correlation for rain zone mass transfer is presented. Existing dry/wet cooling systems in industry are discussed briefly. The developed computer programs for wet cooling towers and the existing program for natural draft dry cooling towers are modified and linked to facilitate a program to simulate dry/wet cooling systems. An example is given to show the benefit of a dry/wet system, by adding a mechanical draft wet cooling tower to a power station with an existing dry cooling system and calculating the annual power output.
