Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. Hypertext is relatively new computer software technology that deals with knowledge engineering. The technology is described as consisting of nodes (chunks of information which could be audio, animation, pictures, video or graphics) and links (associative connections). These two are the defining components or characteristics of Hypertext and are used to structure the information to bring out the underlying key concepts. This knowledge organisation is similar to the structure and working of the human mind and it is therefore reasoned that assimilation and comprehension of Hypertext information will be enhanced. It could therefore play an important role in education, particularly in tertiary forestry education. Education is a lifetime experience and not merely the memorising of facts during a specific stage of a person’s life. Education is also the ultimate selling and acquisition process of not only an ideal set of behaviours, but also of a new identity and a set of values that go hand in hand with that identity. Hypertext technology has the capability of electronically reflecting the mind as an associative multi-dimensional device by integrating user-friendly computing, interactive television, database management, graphics, animation, voice, sound and knowledge based expert system technologies into a single powerful system. In Hypertext systems the computer is used as a powerful aid to independent self-study, especially for refresher or correspondence courses. The design of self-study courses is a most critical factor and different authoring software packages are available for this purpose. One such system, HyperWriter!, was used to convert existing Forest Management lecture notes into Hypertext to illustrate the technique and value of the medium. It is speculated that Hypertext will play a major role in education in the future.
