The study deals with the design of a framework for contracting in supervision. The need for supervision by contract is clearly evident from examples in practice, where social workers experience uncertainties about role performance, mutual expectations and negative feelings about the supervisor‑supervisee relationship. With available social work literature on contracting in practice, a parallel can be drawn with the contract in supervision. For the purpose of the empirical study an exploratory study method was used. Herewith investigative work was implemented on a group of practising social workers in the social work profession by means of purposive sampling. Through quantitative research and a questionnaire, data was gathered and analysed. Consequently criteria were obtained for a framework for supervision by contract. The supervision contract will enable the supervisor and the supervisee to implement goal focused contracting. Therefore the framework for supervision by contract, as well as supervision by means of objectives, emphasize a greater participation of the social worker and assist to determine the focus of learning. When the learning needs and objectives are included in the contract and the content is known, the tension of the supervision process reduces and this can increase the mutual interaction and involvement of both parties. Supervision by contract is therefore a fluid process and is a joint learning experience for both supervisor and the social worker. From this mutual contract flows the implementation of an educational program. The content of the educational agreement spells out in explicit contract which determines the learning needs, priorities, objectives, mutual roles, expectations, content, time, number of sessions and the evaluation of performance objectives. On the other hand a positive supervisor‑supervisee relationship correlates with reduced tension and increased learning abilities in the educational process and it includes an implicit contract namely, that the social worker is responsible for performance and increased professional growth, whilst the supervisor accepts responsibility to offer assistance, so that performance objectives can be reached. Therefore goal oriented contract supervision will promote the relationship between the supervisor and the social worker.
