Dept. of Education Policy Studies. Teacher-administrator relationships Teacher participation in administration Teacher-principal relationships Dissertations -- Education Tesis (M. Ed.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1993. Micropolitical processes occur in the internal organisational set-up. They point to the actions of individuals and groups that are aimed towards satisfying their ideals, interests and needs, sometimes to the detriment of others. It is a field that had been acknowledged by related disciplines but only recently has it been recognised as part of the educational situation. Micropolitics are practised as people either prevent others from doing their jobs or lobby support for their own motives. These actions also form part of organisational management. The principal must realise that the professional staff is the institution's greatest asset. The particular management style of the school leader is either acceptable to the staff members or not. The initiation of micropolitics occurs as soon as the school leader's authority is questioned. The school leader's management style has been seen up to now as something that is adapted to the situation, but a political perspective was neglected until now. The teacher finds himself in a bureaucracy that restricts his creative autonomy. This rigid system encompasses a socio-political structure that actually is responsible for executing and achieving the goals of the school organisation. In the past researchers have concentrated mainly on the various apparent structures, but they neglected to address the socio-political structures. These theories are now increasingly prevalent. The teacher with his unique socio-cultural background is partly a bureaucratised person who must hold his own by relying on his own frame of reference. This directs him in his daily actions. The teacher is, furthermore, a professional employee who has been appointed in his totality. His personal feelings and attitudes accompany him to his place of work. Thus the school becomes a personal political symbol. The supposition is that school leaders do not always acknowledge staff members in their complex totality. There have been attempts to typify teachers politically in order better to understand their micropolitical activities. Both formal and informal groups receive attention as the teacher joins others either to strive towards similar interests or to use the group as a means to an end. When the interests and expectations between teachers and school leaders become issues of conflict, certain tactics and strategies come into effect to promote personal interests. This is so common and normal in the daily interactions with colleagues that it is accepted as given. People, however, seldom readily admit to being involved in the subtle striving toward achieving hidden agendas and concealed motives. Every teacher’s interaction in the school organisation takes on political meaning because these actions never occur in isolation. Even the apparent forbearance from politicking may influence others. The analysis of the school organisation as a political arena is advocated in order to investigate these processes and the mutual connection between them. It is also very important that the teacher must accept responsibility for his actions. This can only happen when he is politically literate. Training in this regard does not yet exist. This thesis is an attempt to put the above-mentioned aspects into perspective.
