Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. This thesis investigates the automation of certain areas in the planning and management of the current South African telephone network. The objective is to identify those areas of telephone network planning and management which can be automated and to find modelling algorithms which are immediately applicable to the South African telephone network, and which can be used for at least the next decade. The resulting models are implemented and recommended for inclusion into an automated telephone network modelling and analysis package which is being developed at the University of Stellenbosch. Three areas of telephone network planning and management are identified as candidates for automation, namely, dimensioning, forecasting and evolution. An extensive investigation into each one of these management areas is performed, and a modelling algorithm which best suits the constraints of the South African telephone network is implemented for each management area. Both the dimensioning model developed by Berry and a traditional hierarchical telephone network dimensioning model are implemented. Through a comparison of these two dimensioning models it is shown that Berry's model is superior to the traditional dimensioning model, and therefore Berry's model is selected for inclusion into the automated modelling package. The implemented forecasting model consists of a traffic matrix interpolation model and Kruithof's forecasting algorithm. An implementation-specific extended version of the evolution model developed by Combot, Tsui and Weihmayer is described and implemented. Each one of the resulting models is tested with the same test network, and the results of these tests are documented. The outcome of this thesis is three models which can be used to assist South African telephone engineers in the planning and management of the South African telephone network. It is shown that these three models are applicable to the specific circumstances of the South African telephone network.
