Music is the core of radio programming and radio music is a substantial part of musical life in contemporary society. Yet little research is done on the phenomenon "radio music". Broadcasting systems throughout the world are being subjected to commercialization and deregulation. This has important consequences for radio music. The hypothesis stated at the commencement of this study is that the increasing commercialization and deregulation of the broadcast media, specifically of radio, plays an important part in determining the character and quality of radio music. Only a limited sector of musical life is represented in radio music, and this influences the creation and consumption of music in general. The technological aspects of musical reproduction and distribution include the development of radio, FM, high fidelity en stereo. These developments are discussed (chapter 2) in relation to their influence on the position of music in radio. Radio as a socio-cultural institution reflects the political, economic and social realities in which it develops (chapter 3). The two most important trends in broadcasting organisations are represented by the public service broadcasting system of the BBC and the commercial broadcasting system of the USA. A comparison between these broadcasting systems reveals the underlying premises and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Commercialization ad deregulation of broadcasting (chapter 4) has become an irreversable process which increasingly blur the distinction between public service and commercial radio. the informative and pedagogical functions public service radio lay claim to are under the influence of commercial considerations subordinated to the entertainment function. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Musiek vorm die belangrikste uitsaaimateriaal van radio, en radiomusiek is 'n substantiewe deel van die hedendaagse musieklewe. Tog is nog relatief min navorsing oor die verskynsel "radiomusiek" gedoen. Die uitsaaiwese wêreldwyd beleef 'n tydperk van vinnige verandering, hoofsaaklik in die rigting van kommersialisering en deregulering. Hierdie veranderinge het 'n belangrike invloed op radiomusiek. Die hipotese wat ter aanvang van dié studie gestel word, is dat die toenemende kommersialisering en deregulering van die uitsaaiwese, spesifiek radio, direk verband hou met die aard en kwaliteit van radiomusiek. Slegs 'n baie beperkte sektor van die musieklewe word in radiomusiek verteenwoordig, en dit het belangrike implikasies vir die skepping en verbruik van musiek in die algemeen. Die tegnologiese aspekte van musikale reproduksie en -oordrag sluit onder andere die ontwikkeling van radio, FM, hoëtrou en stereofonie in. Hierdie ontwikkelinge word bespreek (hoofstuk 2) met betrekking tot die invloed daarvan op die posisie van musiek in die radio. As sosio-kulturele institusie (hoofstuk 3) weerspieël radio die politieke, ekonomiese ne sosiale realiteite waarin die ontwikkel (het). Die twee belagrikste vorme van uitsaaiorganisasies word verteenwoordig deur die openbarediens-uitsaaistelsel van die BBC en dei kommersiële uitsaaistelsel van die VSA. 'n Vergelyking tussen dié twee uitsaai-organisasies ontbloot die veronderstellings waarop dit onderskeidelik berus en die voor- en nadeke van elk. Kommersialisering en deregulering van die uitsaaiwese (hoofstuk 4) het 'n onomkeerbare proses geword wat die onderskeid tussen openbarediensradio en kommersiële radio in toenemende mate laat vervaag. Die inligtings- en opvoedingsfunksies waarop openbarediensradio aanspraak maak, word ter wille van kommersiële oorwegings ondergeskik gestel aan die vermaaklikheidsfunksie.
