In this study the focus is on Nunan’s (1991) views of task based second-language teaching. The aim is to explore task based syllabus design and task based lesson design, and to set up guidelines according to Nunan’s (1991) task based methodology. An important aspect of this approach is the involvement of learners and teachers in the lesson content, and the clear differentiation of roles during activities. The fact that the structure of the lesson focus on communication and communicative abilities, does not imply that grammar plays no role, in fact it forms an integral part of the lesson and it is dealt with informally during speaking and writing activities. Because of the learners involvement in the lesson and the selection of lesson-content, methodology and evaluation the syllabus and lesson design is partly seen as a combined effort of both teacher and learner. In the first part of the study we consider the term "Second-Language Acquisition" (SLA), the nature of communicative abilities and the characteristics of the good language learner. In the second part we explicate the term "Receptivity". According to a survey done at a number of schools we tried to establish what the receptivity of pupils is towards Xhosa as a second language. In the third part of the study, we consider the term "Task" within the Second language curriculum and the properties of a task based syllabus design. In the fourth part of the study we give some examples of task based lesson designs selected from those topics on which the learners prefer to communicate in Xhosa. In the concluding section, a summary is given of the previous sections and some misconceptions and opinions about language learning according to Lightbown and Spada are discussed. This study on task-based syllabus design is contains by the following supplements: 1. The questionaire and the results of the survey. 2. Some articles taken from the Bona magazine from which the different topics were selected.
