Coast changes -- South Africa -- Table Bay Beach erosion -- South Africa -- Table Bay Erosion -- South Africa -- Table Bay Dissertations -- Civil engineering Thesis (MEng) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. The idea for this study developed from a dispute between the South African Transport Services and the Milnerton Municipality about erosion along the Milnerton coastline, dating back to the early 1980's. Over the years a number of studies have been undertaken to investigate the stability of various sites along the Table Bay coastline. Most of these studies concluded that extensions to the harbour influenced the stability inside the bay. Another factor quoted was the urban development on the Bloubergstrand dunefield. Some of these studies calculated the extent of the erosion to be 80 m, while another study came up with a figure of 400 m. An investigation into residential properties set out along the Milnerton coastline, revealed the erosion to be 50 m maximum, and to have taken place between 1944 and 1967. Beach sections showed erosion of between 15 and 20 m in the area of the Diep River Mouth, that took place between 1967 and 1993. The rest of the coast was in equilibrium. Once it was established that erosion did take place, the next step was to search for reasons for this erosion and the following aspects were carefully looked at: • Sediment entering Table Bay from the south. • The development of and periodic extensions to the Port of Cape Town inside the bay. • The sediment load being discharged into the bay by the Diep and Salt Rivers, as well as various smaller streams. • The 'urbanization' of a large dunefield that existed to the northeast of the bay in the 1930's. • The erecting of various structures on or just behind the frontal dunes. Due to the limited erosion, it was difficult to name a specific cause. Factors that might have attributed to the erosion are the residential development in the dunefield to the north of Table Bay, the reduction in the quantity of sand transported in mainly the Diep River, structures erected on the frontal dunes and wave reflection off the secondary breakwater of the harbour. The main conclusion reached in this study is that the bay is in equilibrium, except for the area around the Diep River Mouth. The study recommends that the foundation of the golf clubhouse and restaurant should be protected from especially short term erosion and that monitoring of the coast by means of the measuring of beach sections should take place.
