| spelling | oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/58159 The design, synthesis and characterization of neutral polymeric bonding agents Du Toit, Thomas Van Reenen, A. J. Sanderson, R. D. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Science. Dept. of Chemistry & Polymer Science. Polymers Membranes (Technology) Dissertations -- Polymer science Thesis (M. Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. The surface modification of films, fibres and membranes may be approached in many ways. In this study the surface modification of membranes was approached in a novel way, namely via the synthesis of a neutral polymeric bonding agent for polysulphones. The principle of adhesion of the neutral polymeric bonding agent to a polysulphone substrate is based on the solubility parameter theory. The concept of solubility parameters is fully discussed, and several possible means of theoretical and experimental predictions evaluated. Relationships between the solubility parameter and the Flory-Huggins function, surface tension, solution viscosity, temperature and chromatographic data, are also reviewed. A copolymer (I) of acrylic acid/acrylonitrile was synthesised to match the solubility parameters of polyethersulphone (II) as reported in literature. The solubility parameters of polysulphone (III) were determined experimentally by the solvent spectrum method. Good agreement was found between the solubility parameter values as determined experimentally, theoretically and those quoted in literature. A terpolymer (IV) of styrene, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate was designed to match the solubility parameters of (III), and synthesised. The theoretical and experimentally determined solubility parameters of the terpolymer (IV) corresponded well with those of (III). However compatibility studies proved that (IV) and (III) were only partially compatible. The neutral polymeric bonding agent has to bond to the surface, but it must also create the desired surface characteristics on the polysulphone membrane. It was deemed possible to use the acrylonitrile groups present in (IV) as grafting sites for hydrophilic side chains. As a first stage poly(acrylonitrile) (V) was grafted with vinyl acetate via a thioamidation reaction. This grafting reaction was somewhat inefficient when attempted with (IV). A Light Intensity Thermal Analyser was also constructed. It consists of a light intensity sensor fitted to a hotstage microscope. The instrument allows for data smoothing, event differentiation and graphic display. The instrument is useful for determination of crystalline melting points, melting ranges, blend miscibility and composition, and critical solution temperature. As a low cost attachment to a light microscope, it can take over several functions of a DSC.
