ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the influence of inherent and acquired behaviour on the control of black-backed jackal, Canis mesomelas, populations in the Cape province. Initially, current black-backed jackal management practices were investigated under different circumstances, to determine how behaviourally linked factors influence the performance of control devices. Black-backed jackals were captured with gin traps or killed by coyote getters (explosive-propelled) in experimental control operations in the field. During this phase, results indicated that low population densities of black-backed jackal and intensive predator control efforts by land occupants negatively influenced their success in capturing black-backed jackals.
