| spelling | oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/58181 The love poems of Sylvia Plath Garcia, Ursula Gagiano, A. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of English. Plath, Sylvia -- Criticism and interpretation Dissertations -- English literature Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. The purpose of this thesis has been to study the poems of Sylvia Plath as works of art which transform and transcend the perceived boundaries of her life. Emphasis has been placed on a close reading of the poetry itself, and thus poems have been chosen and allowed to fall within the study as they have been deemed to be most meaningful. Consistently, the poems have been found to be remarkable in their richness of description, imagery and mood, a richness which demonstrates Plath’s passionate attachment to the physical and emotional texture of life. The poems clearly challenge dulled responses, bland acceptance of human fate and common disregard of the deeper issues of life. This thesis has explored the way in which they steadily confront both the joys and the sorrows of life, delineating a profound need for love and the correlated perception of wholeness in human experience. The poetry of Sylvia Plath is love poetry: it never strays from questioning the inconsistencies of human love, nor from its quest for an all-consuming, transcendent love to provide strength and fulfilment within and beyond mortal existence.
