Fluctuations in temperature give rise to fluctuations in the capacity of an air-cooled heat exchanger. Temperatures above the design temperature will lower the heat rejection rate and may reduce the corresponding production that will lead to a loss in possible profit. In this thesis, a viability study is done on an air-cooled heat exchanger with adiabatic precooling to improve the effectiveness of heat transfer during periods of high ambient temperatures and during peak demand. A computer program is adapted to evaluate the capacity of a forced draft, air-cooled heat exchanger with adiabatic precooling. During precooling the metal surfaces of the heat exchanger must be kept dry. The required drop size is calculated analyticaly. Different types of spray atomizers are tested experimentally to de rmine whether they create the desired drop size. An economic evaluation is done on the viability of the concept.
