Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. AIDS (Disease) Teenagers -- Interviews Teenagers -- Attitudes Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. Research goal was to phenomenologically investigate the perceptions that non-infected adolescents have regarding the AIDS threat. Nine subjects who volunteered to participate in response to a newspaper advertisement were interviewed by means of an unstructured interview. Interviews were audiotaped and recorded verbatim. Three interview protocols were selected for analysis based on verbal expressiveness and content. Selected protocols represent 2 females and 1 male, all of whom are white, middle- to upper-class, adolescent residents of the suburb of Durbanville, Western Cape. Process of data analysis included reading through entire protocol, discrimination of natural meaning units, transformation of the meaning units into psychological language, identification of essential themes, general description of the phenomenon under investigation, and external validation. Results indicate individual as well as consensual thematic constructions. Consensual themes regarding the phenomenological construction of AIDS included: knowledge and behaviour, philosophical thoughts regarding AIDS, fear, and attitudes. These were discussed in terms of existing prevention theory.
