Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Dept. of Industrial Psychology. ENGLISH SUMMARY: Worker participation is the process whereby employees attain a voice in the decision-making process of an enterprise. The degree of influence afforded to the workforce varies from work related issues on the shop-floor to executive policy decision on the board of directors. Management and labour are divided in South Africa as to why such a management style should be implemented: Management strive to achieve the economic goals of the enterprise in an efficient manner, while labour aims to increase its control of the processes of the enterprise. A problem linked to this divide between capital and labour is the method whereby the worker participation programme should be implemented. This study attempts to identify the necessary elements that should be taken into consideration when implementing such a worker participation programme. This will not only facilitate the planning of the programme, but also its ultimate success. To achieve this goal, concepts were identified that represents the various components of worker participation. The international environment was evaluated, thereby identifying various methods whereby worker participation could be implemented. The South African environment was also studied in an attempt to facilitate the process of implementation. Finally, a framework was proposed whereby worker participation should be implemented.
