Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. The aim of this thesis is to design a very reliable real-time embedded computer system for use as the primary computer system on the Sunsat satellite. This includes the hardware design as well as the selection of the high-level language and kernel which is used in the software development phase. A literature study is done to determine the requirements for a real-time embedded computer system. These requirements are expanded with the addition of the requirements and limitations placed on the design by the Sunsat application. In the conceptual design the philosophy behind the selection of the Processor and other components for the primary computer system are discussed. The electrical connections between the different subsystems of the satellite are also discussed, and some standard interfaces for connecting subsystems of the satellite are defined. Some design concepts used in the design of the primary computer system is also mentioned. A detail hardware design is done. This is implemented for use in the engineering model of Sunsat. Hardware testing is done on the implementation of the hardware. The selection of an appropriate high-level language and kernel for Sunsat's software development phase is discussed and reasons are given for the choices which are made. Recommendations and suggestions are given which can be implemented to ensure an even more reliable flight model for Sunsat.
