Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Electric insulators and insulation High voltages Pollution -- Measurement -- Electrical equipment Dissertations -- Electrical engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. A control strategy and operating routine for a new insulator pollution monitoring apparatus (IPMA) has been developed. The monitor, which is based on a previous unsuccessful model, is able to determine the severity of pollution present on a test insulator by measurement of the surface conductance. The role of environmental parameters is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the role of condensation in the measurement of conductance. The operating routine of the new IPMA has been substantially redesigned in order to accommodate the findings of the thesis. A calibration procedure, relating IPMA results to the standard parameter of equivalent salt deposit density, has been established.
