Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Electric relays -- Data processing Protective relays -- Data processing Electric transformers -- Data processing Dissertations -- Electrical engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. This thesis deals with two aspects of a computenzed protection relay test system. Firstly the development of a programmable transputer-based digital-to-analog converter is described. The system comprises a stand-alone transputer module that is programmed from a host computer via a serial communication card called a link adapter. The converter card contains on-board memory modules to which test data is downloaded from the host PC before testing commences. Eight simultaneous D/A converter channels are available on the system, which combined with a maximum of 8 consecutive time slots, all at unique sampling rates, make this a highly versatile system for arbitrary waveform synthesizing of complex waveform data. Another advantage of the system is its independence from the host PC when the actual D/A conversion takes place, which means the PC is available for other tasks such as the interpretation of the relay response. The second part of this thesis deals with the acquisition of realistic test data. The simulation package EMTP was used as the primary source of test data. One particular network element, namely the capacitive voltage transformer (cvt), was investigated and modelled. The cvt is included as an essential circuit element for the purpose of relay testing simulations, since it normally constitutes the transducer that links the high voltage network and the relay. It was found that the cvt also inroduces some distortion into the transformed waves as seen by the relay. This phenomenon was investigated, specifically with regard to the high frequency voltage components of the cvt.
