Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Practical Theology and Missiology. Wisdom Modernism (Christian theology) Pastoral psychology Personality Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1994. The researcher shows that wisdom is a complex, pluralistic and developing concept. Therefore, the study of wisdom within pastoral theology cannot be limited by singular writings of wisdom literature. The wisdom tradition of Israel has a significant theological tradition which is specially characterized by "theology in play". Within this, the human interpretation of reality plays an important role in a difficult historical situation. Modernity is a pragmatic period where there is requested of pastoral theology to go about with the many modern paradigms in a creative manner, especially incorporating human experiences into the process of understanding. This means that pastoral theology should not be boarded by absolutism, but that a greater broad-mindedness should be shown to human experiences within the processes of knowing, especially in terms of eco-relations. The human's interaction with his environment is a dynamic process of interpretation which is influenced by a modernity-feeling. The researcher describes this modernity-feeling as follows: 1) Rationality-principle which questions life and all its functions, as well as a withdrawal from God to human experiences; 2) An enormity of information-processing which creates disorder of cognitions; 3) Nihilism as a possible result due to doubt. The researcher requests a rebirth in humanity and a loyalty to the earth. According to the researcher, a pastoral hermeneutic should not be confined by "a model" of life-assistance only, but requests a responsible hermeneutic within the interdependence of various knowledgeables An evolutionary interpretation of information provides therefore a possible hermeneutic starting-point, which keeps count of the wisdom in the Bible, the wisdom tradition and a temporal understanding of wisdom within modernity. The characteristics of this wisdom is: 1) A cognitive understanding of the human manner of being within creation; 2) A pattern of behaviour which will be characterized by an interdissiplinary knowledge of systemic needs; 3) A condition of being within eco-relations. Wisdom requests not only the wise usage of knowledge, but involves a sensitivity in the understanding of human conceptual-frameworks within which a wise, intelligent and creative personality can cope constructively with problems. This aspect cannot be separated from the broad personality development of humans. A process of intercommunication between the pastoral theologist and the client is neccessary in the development of the human being in modemity, the former which provides the playground for significant questioning. Significant questioning can provide greater clarity for the human's religious experience within modernity. The principle of wisdom encompasses the total dimensions of being, experience and cognition in the human being. The pastoral theologist can thus use these functions of wisdom in understanding, diagnoses and in therapy for the modem human being. In other words, wisdom should form an integral part of the pastoral hermeneutic process in initial therapy.
