spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/58406 Effect of inhalation anesthesia on myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury Coetzee, Andree Lochner, A. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dept. of Anesthesiology & Critical Care. Inhalation anesthesia Dissertations -- Medicine Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. over a period of 10 years, the author has noted that patients who received one of the inhalation anesthetic drugs, had greater cardiovascular stability during and after a cardiopulmonary bypass procedure. This appeared to be more apparent approximately 12 to 24 hours after completion of surgery. However, as this was only an impression, a pilot study was performed to verify this subjective impression. It must however be noted that, at that time, there was already a significant body of research publications suggesting that the inhalation anesthastic drugs could affect calcium transients in the peri-ischemic period. Also, the concept of myocardial reperfusion injury was the subject of active research by numerous eminant scientists. However, publications from animal experiments which did suggest that e.g. halothane was beneficial to the ischemic and or reperfused heart, failed to distinguish between events which occurred during ischemia and during reperfusion. Also, there was no evidence that these beneficial effects of the volatile anesthestic agents could be extrapolated to patient.
