The purpose of this thesis is to serve as a guide for the management and operation of a small road transport business. Costs are an integral part of each business and a good costing system is of great importance to the small transport operator, as tariffs are determined thereby. Financial and general management is just as important for success. A few important financial principles are discussed, namely cash flow, budget planning, break-even charts, vehicle financing and transport productivity. The drawing up of a business plan and proposals for improving business practices and fleet activities are some of the aspects that are discussed under general management. Robbery of motor trucks and goods is increasing as a result of several factors. The necessary precautions to combat this problem are discussed. A survival plan has been prepared to help the road transport operator to survive during recession times. Each business functions within an economic and legal framework and the rules and regulations applicable to the small road transport operator are discussed in detail.
