Faculty of Science. Dept. of Chemistry and Polymer Science. Adhesives Polymers Polyamides Dissertations -- Polymer science Thesis (M. Sc.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. Adhesion between fluoropolymers and other materials such as polyamides have historically presented problems, mostly because of the inherent repellant nature of the fluorine atom. Many surface modification techniques have been investigated and applied in order to achieve better adhesion between fluoropolymers and dissimilar materials. Recently the concept of neutral bonding agents (NPBA) was mooted as a means of improving adhesion between dissimilar materials. The premise of the concept of NPBAs is that “like adheres to like” and that polymer molecules can therefore be designed to achieve a bonding interphase between incompatible materials. This study comprised the design and synthesis of a NPBA for fluoropolymers and polyamides. First, the synthesis of a graft copolymer comprising of a backbone of a soluble fluoropolymer and grafts of an amorphous polyamide was undertaken. Second, an attempt was made to introduce functionality to a fluoropolymer backbone via the intermediate formation of double bonds, assuming that this would increase adhesion between the fluoropolymer and polyamides. The synthesized materials were evaluated as NPBAs by means of physical testing. Laminates of polyamide cloth (both untreated and impregnated with functionalized fluoropolymer solutions) and films of the fluoropolymer and the NPBAs were subjected to peel tests. Factors such as lamination temperature, the effect of mass pick-up of impregnated cloth samples and the effect of water saturation on adhesion was investigated. Graft copolymers were synthesized by means of solution γ-irradiation of the fluoropolymer in the presence of maleic anhydride as grafting monomer. Fluoropolymer/polyamide grafts were obtained by reacting maleic anhydride functionalized fluoropolymer in an extruder with polyamide homopolymer. Carbonyl functionality was introduced into the chemically treated fluoropolymer by treating it with oxidizing agents. Peel tests indicated that increases in adhesion occurred at higher lamination temperatures when NPBA was added. For impregnated polyamide cloth samples, mass pick-up influenced adhesion positively and water saturation of cloth samples showed a decrease in adhesion.
