Dept. of Education Policy Studies. Teachers Teaching Teaching -- Vocational guidance Dissertations -- Education Tesis (M. Ed.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1994. The purpose of this study is to determine the contribution of the educational profession, the department of education and the principle, in guiding education on both macro and micro levels towards professionalizing. The principal has a specific task to perform in the school, namely to motivate and inspire his staff to promote professionalism in education. He is an important determining factor with regard to the prevailing climate in a school. The principal must be well equipped for the task. He must be positive and an enthusiastic participant in school activities. The principal plays a most important part in guiding education towards professional status. Some authors and researchers believe that education cannot claim total professionalism as the occupation does not meet the demands of a professional occupation when measured against the criteria.
