A review of overseas literature on cross-cultural counselling and psychotherapy showed that one has to be appropriately trained in order to deal with culturally different clients. In a plural society like South Africa multiculturally competent psychologists are needed, given the valuable contribution they could make in the social sphere or this fast changing nation. In the present study the experiences of a group of students working with culturally different clients were recorded during interviews and hereafter transcribed. The goal of the study was to analise the results and to utilize it in the modification of the student training program, thus rendering the program more relevant and efficient in preparing students for their task in a multicultural society. The subjects, students undergoing Master's level training in c ounselling psychology at the Psychology Department of the University of Stellenbosch, were interviewed about their experiences while working with members of the so-called 'Coloured' cultural group at the Mitchell's Plain School Clinic. Content analysis, a Qualitative research technique for the identification of themes in text, was utilized to analyze the transcribed interviews . No hypotheses were made, the aim of the study being the description rather than the interpretation of subjects' experiences. The themes identified were categorized and grouped into the following central experiential themes: on barriers between subjects and clients; on learning and training; and on the experience of counselling. Recommendations for further research based on the study findings were made. Given the descriptive nature of the study no generalizations were made.
