Litt.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1994. This study seeks to contribute to the debate surrounding the origin of variants, whether Vorlage-based or translational, in the Septuagint. In the first two chapters the issues in this debate are treated with particular reference to Qumran and what we now know of the textual diversity- and scribal tendencies in use during the Second Temple Period. But more than that, the study wishes in chapter three to bring to the discussion the evidence contributed by Rabbinic literature toward a more inclusive theory of the origin of variant readings in the Septuagint. The idea is to compare the LXX and the Jewish commentary on Exodus 12-23, the Mekilta deRabbi Ishmael to see if there is a common text-base or at least comparable exegetical traditions to be discerned in both of them. A theoretical framework on the dating of Mekilta is established within which it may safely be assumed that it is not anachronistic to compare elements of Rabbanic commentary which is generally regarded as a late document, with the LXX which is comparatively early, because midrashic literature is known to contain very ancient material. Chapter four then, lists 46 examples of agreement between the commentary of Mekilta and the variants in the LXX. These agreements lie predominantly on the level of halakha. The conclusion which may be drawn from this is that LXX Exod 12-23 contains among others, variants which are ascribable to the influence of Jewish exegesis on the translator and are therefore of no text-critical value. The factor of Jewish influence on variants in the Septuagint has not sufficiently been explored in major textual commentaries and ought to be brought into consideration in much greater measure.
